Lobola dating, explained
Lobola is the bride price that joins two families across much of Southern Africa. We took the name because it says something an app name cannot: this is about marriage, family and respect — not casual matching. Here is what that means in practice.
The meaning behind the word
In Shona and Ndebele tradition, lobola (or roora) is the exchange between families that recognises a marriage. It is a conversation between elders, a mark of seriousness, and an acknowledgement that a marriage joins more than two people.
We do not arrange, price or negotiate lobola — those customs belong to families. What we borrowed is the standard it sets. Our members are here with the same intent their grandparents would have recognised, even if the introduction now happens online.
How Lobola differs from a dating app
Application, not sign-up
Every member answers a considered set of questions about background, faith, family and intent. A person reads it. Not everyone is accepted.
Verified before visible
Identity and photos are checked before a profile goes live, so the person in the picture is the person you meet.

- Is Lobola a dating app?
- It is closer to a private members' club than an app. There is no public browsing and no endless swiping: you apply, you are verified by a person, and you receive a small set of considered introductions.
- Who is Lobola for?
- Marriage-minded Zimbabwean professionals, at home and across the diaspora — currently concentrated in the UK, South Africa, Australia and Canada.
- Does Lobola arrange or negotiate lobola payments?
- No. We do not take part in any traditional negotiations. The name reflects the seriousness of intent our members bring; the customs themselves belong to families.
- Is it free to join?
